Back to School

Going back to school and starting a new school year can be both exciting and stressful all rolled into one.  That goes for kids and parents!  Of course a new grade and a new teacher can be a bit anxiety provoking for kids and they do need some extra reassurance and time to adjust... but some children experience this to a greater degree. 
Our children with special needs often are more sensitive to change and tend to thrive on structure, consistency, and predictability.  Starting a new school year and getting back into the swing of things can be a rough time for them and for parents. 
Some helpful tips to consider:
  • Setting a schedule at home for mornings and after school
  • Being in contact with the teacher
  • Setting a weekly reward system for desired behavior
  • Using toys to reenact a school day and trouble-shoot touch spots
  • Focus on good sleep and healthy eating
  • Remembers that each day will get better for your child!
